I'm still running CentOS 6, and I was planning on waiting for cPanel to support CentOS 8 before I migrated my server in order to benefit from all the goodies it includes.

According to the Feature Request, cPanel CentOS 8 support was planned for early 2020, but there hasn't been an update to that thread in several months. Today, I noticed that cPanel is blocking upgrades to v. 88 for CentOS 6, and will no longer support CentOS 6.

Both the Feature Request and the previous thread about CentOS 8 support are closed to replies, so I was wondering if I can get an ETA on when CentOS 8 support will be available in order to decide whether to delay my server migration, or to go ahead and migrate to CentOS 7 now. I understand if COVID-19 has thrown a wrench into development, but I'd hate to migrate to a CentOS 7 server only to find CentOS 8 support is available a month or two from now. :)

Thanks!

I guess that the stabilization of Centos 8 will reach the end of 2020.

Either by the end of the year, you will continue to wait with the centos 6 in the 86 version and when the centos 8 support comes, you will switch directly. Or, you will already have 2 times the workload, like switching to centos 7 and then switching to centos 8, but you will have more time. This can give you flexibility in the migrate process.

I heard third quarter unofficially.
That would be great. I could wait that long.

Hopefully, we can get some official word from one of the cPanel folks here.

It won't be the end of the world if I have to go with CentOS 7; it's supported for several more years by the developers, and probably for at least a few years by CPanel, but I would like to go with CentOS 8.

Thanks @cPanelLauren I saw that thread, and took a look at the Up Next | cPanel page. I would have replied in that earlier thread but it's understandably closed.

Is there someone/somewhere I can ask to get an idea of the ETA?
Here but I don't have any more information than that now. There's no ETA I've been provided and there's nothing updated on the Up Next page. I'll poke again in the morning and see if I can get anything more up to date for you guys.

I'm sure someone there knows, it's just a matter of finding them and getting them to share. Thanks for trying @cPanelLauren !

@cPanelKenneth Now you're just messing with me, right? :)

I looked at cPanel Releases, and it only goes up to v. 88. So when is v. 90 expected to hit Release?
We don't usually have planned dates for these items but we're planning on sending 88 to CURRENT next week which means 90 will soon follow to EDGE but it'd still be some time. I don't think I or even @cPanelKenneth could give you a solid date on that though.

Thanks @cPanelLauren I'm not expecting a solid date, I'm just looking for some guidance on whether to migrate my server from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7 now, or to wait for CentoOS 8 support if it's going to be out before CentOS 6 reaches EOL. I won't hold you to it, either, since I know the unexpected can come up with such things.

So v86 of cPanel & WHM is the last version which will support CentOS 6 - but this version is also an LTS version. This means that it will be supported until March 31st, 2021 - so if you're struggling with this decision (transitional times like this are always tough) I'd say hang tight on LTS until we release CentOS 8 support. That way you're on a supported OS, you're doing less migration and remaining on a supported tier of cPanel & WHM.

There's some really great information on this here: CentOS 6 EOL, CloudLinux 6 OS, and you! | cPanel Blog

Thanks @cPanelLauren

I may be confused, but since we're not running Cloudlinux, just vanilla CentOS 6, we will no longer receive security updates to our OS and non-cPanel packages after the CentOS 6 EOL date this November, despite the fact that we're running v86 LTS of WHM, correct?

We are also about to move to a new server. I saw guides on the internet explaining how to install cPanel on CentOS 8. There is also an entry in the 88 change log. Can I install cPanal 88 on CentOS 8 or is it completely incompatible?

I had the same question as the original poster but there is another thing too:
I see that CENTOS 7 is upgradeable to 8 without a need to reinstall (as when going from 6 to 7).
Would cPanel be OK if it is installed on CENTOS 7 and the OS gets updated to 8?
