What is the best method of upgrading a server? I've seen a lot of people say to spin up a new server and transfer data over to the new server. At this point do you update all the IP addresses on DNS? or do you transfer the IP addresses over to the new server? Or something else?

Hey there! Depending on the datacenter's networking configuration, both physical and logical, moving an IP address to a new server may not be possible. You'd have to ask them if that is even an option.

In general, I find it is easier to keep the same nameservers and then update the IP of the nameservers at the registrar level once the migration is complete. This results in a migration with zero downtime, as users would either be directed to the old machine or the new machine as the DNS propagation happens.

Ok thank you, I can try this method, my only problem is that there are a lot of people that I am hosting that are just pointing their IP address to the server so Im not sure a way around that part :( I have a feeling you're right that the datacenter wont be able to do the transfer of the IP address. :(
