I have a Primary Domail of say MyDomain.com and a CNAME www DNS entry for it so that, if I enter into a browser www.MyDomain.com it will take me to my primary web site. Now I have added an AddOn comain of say MyAddOnDomain.com. I can get to that website by typing MyAddOnDomain.com into a browser but if I type in www. MyAddOnDomain.com I get a server not found error. I cannot create a CNAME www MyAddOnDomain.com. I have tried to add a CNAME www.MyAddOnDomain.com MyAddOnDomain.com but that doesn't see to do anything. Is there a way to make a www prefix active for an AddOn domain?

Hey there! The type of domain doesn't matter as far as the DNS is concerned. You mentioned you can't create a CNAME - do you get an error in the interface when you try that? It would also be necessary to ensure the nameservers for that domain are also using the nameservers on the cPanel server - if not, any change you make in cPanel doesn't matter as it won't update the DNS.

There is already a CNAME www MyDomain.com so when I go to create a new CNAME www MyAddOnDomain.com and click on Save it says " Record name www conflicts with another record. "

PS. I notice that when creating the AddOn Domain a SubDomain was also added. If I go to cPanel Admin-> Domains -> SubDomains -> Modify SubDomains I see that there is a listing for MyAddOnDomain,MyDomain.com With that in mind I am wondering if I should just create a www SubDomain for the MyAddOnDomain.com

Yes, you wouldn't be able to create another subdomain on top of that.

MyAddOnDomain.com should have a completely different zone file than mydomain.com. Their only relation is the cPanel account, but they shouldn't have any linked DNS information.

Do you only have access to the cPanel account for the domain and not full root access to the server?

I have a Zone Editor for the 2 AddOn Domains that I have other than the Primary Domain. However, when I go there it will only allow me to add MX records. The only place to add or edit all of the other entries is to edit the DNS entries for the Primary Domain.

Thanks for the additional details. This indicates that your provider has limited what options you can edit in cPanel, which is something they can do at the WHM level. If you reach out to them, they may be able to adjust that for you.

For what it is worth in case others come to this thread I figured it out. I was trying to stay within the Delux cPanel Hosting account that I had and do the DNS records and (attempting) to do the Zone Editor there. I had had the AddOnDomain.com in a Plesk account but I moved it over to the cPanel hosting account. As part of that move I nullified all of the DNS records for the AddOnDomain.com in the Plesk account with A @ PARKED, www.old, mx.old, etc.

What I did was go back to that AddOnDomain.com as a Domain outside of any cPanel or Plesk hosting account and edited 2 of the previously nullified records. I pointed the A @ to the IP of the cPanel shared server and I restored the original CNAME www AddOnDomain.com record. That worked for me. I believe my case was complicated by the move from Plesk to cPanel but it is fine now.. Thanks again.
