email error

a few of my users state &my emails accounts just dissappered& on 2 seperate servers

one user, when he trys to create a email acct gets

Account Created
The e-mail account [email protected] with the login Permission denied /home/acurawo/etc/passwd passwd at Cpanel/Email.pm line 786.

Suggestions?

Is the directory containing all of your web roots on that particular server skewed? for instance if all of your accounts are in /home/USER - have permissions on /home itself been altered?

Make sure that &etc& directory in each user's account is owned by the account's user/group (recurrsively) , and all files within are set to bit 600............
but mailperm is suppose to catch that.

anything in /var/log/maillog when people are logging in- might give you a clue.
