Any idea when cPanel is going to allow backups to be restored remotely from SSH/FTP/S3/Wasabi/Rsync/Hetzner Storage Boxes.

I have JetBackup 5 working on some servers, but the initial index takes forever, so god help me if ever needed to restore all accounts to the server. Before the backup starts JetBackup starts doing some indexing stuff which I guess is due to using its own indexing system. it is so slow even when using 3Gbps on a powerful server with the latest CPU/mem. Luckily, I have Acronis on them too which is 1000x faster.

Yet, when I use the default cPanel backup system to do compressed backups it is very fast! But the trouble is we cannot easily restore accounts using WHM. You have to instead restore the backups back to the local server first yada yada yada.

I prefer to use cPanel backup system because it's easier/better for recovering data. JetBackup 5 is ok and workable for small backup/restore loads but too complex etc for larger workloads, IMO.

Also, I use Acronis which is very fast, but full server recovery is not possible on a certain server, due to hardware used that is not compatible with Acronis. That's why I was having to use JetBackup, but even that is not good for this server.

I want to use cPanel backup system to backup/restore accounts whether full compressed backups or rsync.

There are loads of requests for this at

Search Results (169) - "restore remote backup" | cPanel & WHM Feature Requests

With all the recent price increases, cPanel should focus on their own backup/restore system and stop messing with themes. Paper_lantern was the best ever. There was no need to change it, IMO. If anything, it looks like WebPros wants cPanel to look more like Plesk so eventually can merge them and have all users use Plesk instead? I hope that is not the case...

PPS, to be fair, the new S3 option in JetBackup 5 is not 100% stable yet (even though it has been in development for a long time), and so that probably explains why it takes so long to re-index data and causes high server load and even MySQL service to crash.

I will have to switch back to JetBackup 4 + Rsync via SSH to a backup server in the meantime. JB5 + Wasabi takes way too long and sometimes causes very high CPU/MySQL usage.

It would be great if cPanel could improve their own backup system regarding remote restores at least.

But if what I suspect is right in that WebPros will eventually have/want cPanel customers to migrate to Plesk (again, the control panels are starting to look very similar), then please put everyone out of their misery and let everyone know that is the plan asap so customers can stop trying to get reliable backup/restore system working with cPanel; instead can move to Plesk or alternative panel right away.

Thank you.

Hey there! At this point this type of change is not something that is planned to be added to the cPanel backup system. I'm not saying it couldn't happen in the future, but as for *right now* it's not planned.

As I work through the feature requests I'll make sure the backup team officially reviews that one in the near future.

The S3 in JB5 is still experimental, whereas Hetzner Storage Boxes via SSH is stable. It was several months or so since I last tried it, and back then, it was Hetzner Storage Boxes that was slow and caused high server load, and Wasabi was fast, and server load was low, but now it looks to be the other way around.

Hetzner Storage Boxes is fast, and the server load is normal.

I'm still not 100% on using a non-cPanel structure for backups, but it's the only decent option available right now, and so one can use JB5 + Hetzner Storage Boxes if using their own backup storage server not be an option.

I will keep official cPanel backups from time to time incase there is an issue with the ones generated by JB5.

Cheers.

Hello Chris,

What's your experience over the past 16 months since your last post?

I can see that you use JetBackup now. How's that working for you when you restore from S3 or Storage Boxes?

Do you have to download it from S3 and then upload the necessary files manually to make the restoration or the customer is able to make a self-service restoration through his cPanel account?
