Hello. I hope everyone is safe and healthy.

I'm going to bite the bullet and perform the necessary upgrade of WHM/Cpanel. I'm partial to Ubuntu but would like some suggestions on which upgrade path is the easiest and proceeds with the least amount of hiccups and difficulty's and are there any step by step tutorials for this process?

Currently running my server on Linode and it's performed well there. However I'd like to know from others if their bare metal providers have allowed them to keep their original IP address when doing these upgrades/transfers?

Based on what I've read here I need to get a temporary alternate IP address, do the migration, then go and get my original IP address back. I don't prefer to work with a new IP address as mine is "clean" and many are not, having been soiled by spammers and such. . .

I also ran the upgrade test script:
/scripts/elevate-cpanel --check --upgrade-to=almalinux

which didn't produce too many errors.

Question: does using the upgrade to almalinux script basically upgrade my current server in place? I mean it does it do the full upgrade without the need to the hopping around with a different IP address to do the move?

Thank you.

Yes, the Elevate script will convert CentOS V7 to AlmaLinux V8 in place. Make sure you have a backup/snapshot of your server "just in case".

Ubuntu looks interesting for cPanel, but they have yet to confirm (that I have seen) that you'll be able to distro updates (i.e. 20.04 LTS to 22.04 LTS). They also only currently support 20.04 LTS, which is nearing EOL also.
