What happens during a cPanel Update?

I'm fairly new to cPanel/WHM/Linux. I've learned a lot these past several months. One thing that I have not been part of is updating cPanel. I noticed that if you click on the cPanel version in the upper part of the WHM screen it takes you to the Upgrade to Latest Version page where you can click on the Click to Upgrade button. What happens during an upgrade? Are there any disruptions to web sites and/or email flow? Does the system reboot? Just curious. Thank you.

Hey there! Good question! The server is *never* rebooted by cPanel, for any reason - that type of action has to be performed by the user and there would be confirmation first.

Services don't go offline either - there may be a very brief interruption if a package is updated that requires a service to restart, such as Apache or MySQL, to load the new RPM, but it would be a very brief restart of a few seconds.

Generally what happens is the OS tools are checked for updates, cPanel tools are checked for updates, and any updates are applied or missing cPanel files are replaced.
